SUMMER PROGRAMS PROFILE IV

SUMMER PROGRAMS PROFILE IV

Earlier in the year, ARCHCareersGuide.com published its annual listing of Architecture Summer Program.  Perhaps not amazing, the listing is the most popular webpage of the entire website; a clear 60% of pageviews has been of the listing.

Thus, here is our third highlight of particular summer programs.  In this case, one program, Harvard University is one of the oldest programs to offer its summer program.

Now, do you want to be an architect? Do you want to study architecture?  Are you ready to start your path to becoming an architect?  If so, consider attending one of the many architecture summer programs across the country and abroad.  Participating in one of these exciting, hands-on programs is a probably the best ways to learn more about architecture as a major, and as a career path.

June 28 – July 23, 2021 (4 weeks) – High School/College/Adult

Program Description: Design Discovery Virtual is a four-week summer program offered by the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) that is for anyone seeking to discover the ideas, tools, and techniques of design, whether it’s to prepare for a degree program in a design field, for a career transition, or for professional development.

Similar to our traditional in-person program held at the GSD, Design Discovery Virtual is an opportunity to immerse yourself in design, to approach difficulties as opportunities, to see the world anew. It’s a program that will engage your hands, your eyes, and your mind. It’s a personal creative exploration and a chance to discover how design contributes to a more resilient, just, and beautiful world.

This remote format of Design Discovery will enable students from around the world to participate from their homes while collaborating online with instructors and fellow students.

Format: This program is taught remotely and has a hybrid format inspired by both seminar and studio teaching. In addition to providing design exercises, Design Discovery Virtual will have lectures and discussions that tie the design fields to larger social concerns and to the roles they play in making a resilient, just, and beautiful world. Synchronous discussions and group work are combined with asynchronous content to accommodate time zones outside of the East Coast United States. A participant-to-instructor ratio of no more than 10:1 highlights the collegial and collaborative nature of the program.

Audience: Design Discovery students represent a broad range of ages, lifestyles, and training (most have no previous design experience), and this contributes to a stimulating environment. Many are college students or recent graduates, but the program is also helpful to professionals in their 30s, 40s, or older who are interested in learning about design and/or who are considering a career change. We host an average of 225 participants per year.

Cost and Fees: Program Cost: $2400

Mississippi State University – Starkville, MS – Design Discovery

https://www.caad.msstate.edu/academics/camps/architecture

June 6 – 12, 2021 (1 week) (High School, Incoming freshmen / College Students changing majors)

Mission: The major goal of the summer workshop is to simulate the information, skill, and intensity required for an architectural education and to give clear insight into the practice of architecture. With this experience, it will be possible for the participants to make an informed career decision about architecture and its related disciplines.

Eligibility: Admission into Design Discovery is open to high-school-age students (16 and above) and incoming college freshmen who are interested in the field of architecture and/or other related design fields. Older students are also encouraged to attend, but they must contact the school for specific instructions and arrangements before filling out the application. Neither school transcripts nor letters of recommendation are required.

Prospective students, as well as those considering a career in architecture, have found Design Discovery helpful in confirming their choice of architecture as a profession and in making a smoother transition into the first-year architecture studio. The dedicated faculty members and high-caliber students who work as counselors and instructors during the week provide knowledge, experience, and friendships that will be valuable to entering architecture freshmen. The School of Architecture highly recommends all those who have been accepted into the first-year architecture studio consider participating in Design Discovery.

Cost: $600
