SUCCESS FOR INCOMING STUDENTS

SUCCESS FOR INCOMING STUDENTS

Last year, we launched a parallel topic – Steps for a Successful Semester (see below) but today we focus on creating success as a new incoming student to architecture.  Perhaps, you just graduated from high school and are now launching your college career as a freshman.

As you begin the process of transitioning to college, consider these actions to maximize the start of your college career.

Meet your classmates / residence hall mates: As this is a journey, reach out to your classmates, studio mates, and those you share your residence hall.  Truly, make the effort to meet new people with the intent of becoming friends.  We can guarantee that these “new” friends will become part of your life for many years to come.

Meet your faculty / upperclass students: Absolutely, connect with your faculty for lots of reasons; as well, meet upperclass students to learn from those before you — ask questions about the program, faculty, and how to succeed.

Become Involved: Believe it or not, college is more than just academics; explore activities outside the classroom; for example, attend the lectures for the architecture program, join student clubs, and workout to stay physically active.

Balance: When you start your first year, you will be drawn in many different directions — i.e., academics, homework, etc., but do not forget your health – i.e., eating healthy, sleeping adequate hours.

Assistance: We can promise that you will NOT succeed on your own; thus, reach our for help as needed.  This include your faculty, classmates, and the many campus services available to you.

Be in touch: You may feel completely independent, but continue to connect with you parents, family, and friends.  We can admit that we wrote letters (before the web) almost weekly to our parents, siblings and friends.  Of course, now you can email or text but connect.

We will discuss success for your academics in a coming post, but suffice it to say — attend class and do the work.
